Art in Context, an extra curricular program of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, selects each year a specific theme connecting art and society and concludes its activities with exhibition and publication. This year's theme was Public Relations and the publication with the same title was launched on the occasion of the exhibition at the Cobra Museum (Art in Context exhibition 'Public Relations' runs from 30 May until 9 June 2014). Public Relations publication is "a timely bundle of notes, covering everything from the poetics to politics of contemporary art's PR while facing increasingly complex and complicit societal contexts' (FT).

ED is a collaboration together with Sterre Sprengers, Simone Engelen, Brigiet van der Berg en Nikki Brormann
The book "ED IT: The substantial system for photographic maintenance" explores a four-step system to manually edit a private, digital photo archive down to a representative selection of images. It includes a description of the process and a set of discoveries, about the ways photography is used today, that were made during the archive analysis.

The work Kings Hill is in collaboration with graphic designer Linda Beumer. Coming from an expat background I was intrigued by the question how people manipulate their direct environment to create a sense of home. I traveled to Scotland to photograph the expat community where my parents briefly lived. Linda Beumer responded visually to the images where she emphasizes the sense of artificiality and abandonment.

In Pruimenbloesem zijn beelden gebruikt van de eerste gelijknamige pornofilm voor de Nederlandse bioscopen. De film stills zijn echter door Anne Huijnen verhuld met bloemen. Zij bepaalt wat zichtbaar is en welke beelden worden ontnomen.

Ik ben jou heet het glanzend gouden boekje dat gemaakt is door kunstenaar Milou Abel. De titel kan naar veel verschillende ‘jou’s verwijzen, maar ik ga er vanuit dat het gaat over Esther; de hoofdpersoon en enige persoon waar het boek om draait. Esther is een vrouw van middelbare leeftijd met geelwit geblondeerd haar, een stuurse, lonkende blik richting fotografe en in het bezit van één van de grootste kledingkasten van het land. Milou had Esther al enkele malen op straat zien lopen, altijd weer gehuld in een nieuwe kleurrijke jurk, rok of jas, met een tas aan haar schouder, een sjaal om haar hals en haar haren nauwkeurig gekamd. Esthers voorkomen fascineerde. Op een dag vroeg Milou of ze Esther misschien mocht fotograferen. Een dankbare ‘Ja’ was het antwoord. Esther had ervaring zo vertelde ze: ze was in het verleden model geweest. Zo bouwen Milou en Esther een bijzondere band op die steeds dieper en intiemer wordt. Op een dag tovert Esther een doos van onder haar bed met daarin stapels foto’s. Ze laat Milou beelden van vroeger zien: een jong en wonderschone, dikwijls nagenoeg naakte vrouw toont met een bijna immer afwezige blik haar zijdezachte lichaam aan de fotograaf. Een andere Esther dan de ‘oude’ Esther in het boek. Deze vrouw is geleefd, heeft veel meegemaakt en lijkt een dagelijks gevecht met haar psyche te voeren. Het boekje is op verschillende manieren te lezen. Het zijn twee boeken in één eigenlijk, die pagina voor pagina het leven van Esther ontvouwen. Alsof iedere pagina een sluier is die opgetild wordt en je dichterbij de vrouw brengt die kinderlijk, triest, doorleefd en opgewekt tegelijk aandoet. Esther vertelde Milou eens dat ze vroeger gebukt ging onder haar onzekerheid om haar voorkomen. Nu is ze gelukkig. Het lijkt een paradox. Het jonge prachtige doch ongelukkige meisje, en de vrouw met haar uitpuilende kledingkast en haar wonderlijke voorkomen die vandaag de dag veel beter kan accepteren wie ze is. In het boek schreef Milou teksten die voortkomen uit de vele gesprekken die maker en onderwerp, of maker en muze, samen hadden. Het contact tussen Esther en Milou duurde ruim twee jaar voordat het boek Ik ben jou gemaakt werd. Op de eerste pagina prijkt de jonge Esther, die met vier plakbandjes boven het bed van oude Esther hangt. Om het meisje schittert een gouden randje.

None of these actions took actually place. Their different features did happened, but not in the moment the picture was taken. It's a fake. I want to emphasize my idea of press photography, its deception in the news. Furthermore, the staging is a form of nostalgic act.
