Integrated art & theory program

Art in Context - Integrated art & theory program is an extra curricular program of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. The program offers to students a chance to place their work within particular social contexts and to generate knowledge and experience in addressing specific social issues. This enables students to prepare for their post-academy practice - they are invited to use their work as a means for questioning and re-imagining the state of social and political affairs. Every edition of the program is concluded with an exhibition and a publication in the end of May. The program runs from the beginning of October to the end of May and it’s open to the first year students from all departments.

Art in Context works on a particular topic throughout the year:
2012 (pilot): Stock Market
2012-13: Charity
2013-14: Public Relations
2014-15: Laughter
2015-16: Education

Collaboration with Cobra Museum

This year’s topic will be explored, once again, in collaboration with the Cobra Museum as a continuation of collaboration between the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Cobra Museum. The results of the previous collaboration were the Art in Context exhibition ‘Public Relations’ at the Cobra Museum in May-June 2014 and jointly produced event at the Frascati Theatre in June 2015. Art in Context students visit the Cobra Museum on a regular basis; research its archive, work with the museum curators and attend lectures at the museum. While researching the archive of the Cobra Museum, students mainly focus on the attitudes and social position of Cobra artists from 40’s and 50’s, on hidden or clearly marked ideology in their activities and involved institutions. This year’s collaboration with the Cobra Museum will result in jointly produced events both at their venue and other locations in May-June 2016. A publication ‘Education’ will be published on this occasion. For more information about the museum please visit: cobra-museum.nl.
