Final Works

For the end show I am exhibiting one painting and one installation.

My painting is an exploration of the fading boundaries between journalism and advertising, between editorial and commercial content.
They are allegories of objects in and of the public imagination, displaying a part of the cultural heritage of our time.

My installation, CupKony 2012, is made in response to the biggest viral success of all time: the Kony 2012 video, made by the American organization Invisible Children. The Kony 2012 video sought to mobilise global support for military action to eliminate LRA rebel leader Joseph Kony. The video was shared excessively through social media and in the mass media and was viewed more than 100 million times. Invisible Children asked the world to “make Kony famous” and sold millions of Kony t-shirts, bracelets and posters. People were asked to stop Kony. All the had to do was to share the video and wear the kit.

Despite the great success online, the campaign later received massive critique due to several factual mistakes in the film, as well as portraying a horrific situation in “a manipulated Hollywood entertainment kind of way”.
A public showing of the film in Uganda for an audience of 30,000 people, most of them influenced by Joseph Kony, led to disappointment and anger. Some people threw rocks at the screen.
The abundance of Kony-related merchandise also disheartened some viewers.
One compared it to selling Osama bin Laden paraphernalia after the September 11 attacks, no matter how well-intentioned the organization behind the sales is. “If people in those countries care about us, they will not wear T-shirts with pictures of Joseph Kony for any reason,” said one man, who was abducted by the LRA as a child. “That would celebrate our suffering.”
