MATERIAL DIALOGUES

A project of the design class of all seven groups of the Basicyear.

The Basicyear is the first year of the four-year bachelor programme in Fine Arts and Design. At the Gerrit Rietveld Academie all students enter the Basicyear before commencing a specialisation. One of the core subjects of the Basicyear programme is design. The students work with assignments. For the Eight Cubic Meters project the students were asked to literally fill the vitrines with material that was generated as a side-track of the current assignment. Seven groups, seven current assignments and as a result seven different vitrines, filled by hundred and forty-six individuals.

2 November - 10 December 2016

The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is doing it self: building its own building.
Students were invited to take part in various parts of the creative process. Students of the Ceramics department made design proposals for 3-dimensional wall tiles for the stairwell.

The designs of Ildikó Horváth, Katri Paunu, Ziynet Hidiroglu and Caro de Jonge are on show.

Caro de Jonge's design was chosen by the jury and will be realized in 2017.

'People nowadays are much more likely to leave their scenery when they feel attracted to a different one. A change of scenery impacts individuals in numerous ways. Jungmin Lee reconstructed the attitude of cultural assimilation in his own view while using methods of superimposing images, such as tulips and the coniferous greenery abundant in Dutch gardens.'

October 15 - January 11

In Eight Cubic Meters you can move in front of the scenery of Hugo Rocci’s graduation film Souvents sur les dents.

A polar bear shaped restaurant is the protagonist in Souvents sur les dents. The actors are navigating in a world shaped by Rocci towards and in the polar bear. Language and humour form a forest for the protagonists and the viewer to be lost in.

Rietveld Uncut presents DesignLAB

Rietveld Uncut is an annual joint exhibition by students of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Within the Rietveld the process of making, from concept to work, is an important element. This process often stays invisible to the outside world. Rietveld Uncut aims to shed a light on this unique, dynamic and experimental part of the academy.

DesignLAB students present their projects during Uncut: sculptures, installations and performances of individual students are presented as one installation. In the weeks before Uncut designLAB has to compete with other departments for the ‘best’ spot during Uncut. DesignLAB invites the spectator to listen, feel, look and use their endless imagination watching at the world in a smaller form.

Rietveld Uncut was presented from March 18 – March 22 during ARE YOU ALIVE OR NOT, Looking at ART through the lens of THEATRE at the Brakke Grond.

Wednesday January 14 (4PM) - March 15 (4PM)

Eight Cubic Meters presents: Maria Naidich (student of the TxT department)

‘Over 5.000 people are kidnapped in Mexico every year. On 26 September 2014, police kidnapped and murdered 43 students of the Rural college San Isidro Burgos in Guerrero, Mexico. We are living with an alarming devaluation of life with big amounts of deaths and violence, as a result of a corrupted government. As a student, as a Mexican, as a human being I feel responsible to protest and spread the information, which is controlled by media, about what is really happening in my country and give support to the people who are living in this situation back in Mexico.

I made a video performance at the academy with international students from Island, Turkey, Sweden, Russia, Bosnia, Japan, Tunisia, China, the Netherlands and 15 other countries. In the video, each person named out loud the country they are from and the word “present” in their own language. We are aware and we are present.

During the performance, we all wore t-shirts with a face of one of the 43 students, each portrait drawn by the student wearing the t-shirt. In this process, students created a connection with an other student they never met and they never will.’

September 15 - November 6

The second-year photography students from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie present work based on their workshop with artist Eva-Fiore Kovakovsky. Central to this presentation is the complex relationship between art and the representation of nature. After the students have visited the rich library of Amsterdam's Artis zoo, the postulation of the zoo's Latin motto ‘Natura Artis Magistra’, or ‘nature is the teacher of art and science’, is explored through their work.

Something with food, stones and people

‘They die, I used to say, behind glass, without air. I saw showcases as coffins. My things had to get out of there in order for them to get their chance: away from the protected ceremonious glass door – free. But the showcase is there to open it. Those swing-open doors and that moment of looking, choosing and putting your hand in to get something out, it’s a moment of seduction; electrically charged meeting between hand and object.’

-Edmund de Waal The Hare With Amber Eyes

Rachel Sellem (graduating student Fine Arts) is a thing-maker. In an ongoing color-, shape- and material investigation she makes a collection of objects without a clear beginning or end. The enumeration is born from her hands and the material that was in it, not from an idea.

Keepsake

15 lightboxes as a sea of flowers

Leaving flowers and cuddly toys at scenes of crime and injustice has become a popular ritual. A new ‘tradition’ expressing collective grief. These transient monuments in public space are a symbol of a feeling in between helplessness and acceptance. Helplessness because we are mad with grief; acceptance because we leave flowers, cuddly toys and candlelights instead of revolting against violence and injustice.

By rephotographing her manual adaptations of old photographs of flowers, Mariken Wessels gives them a second life. As a lightbox installation, the ‘monument’ Keepsake is simultaneously abstract and theatrical.

Mariken Wessels graduated in 2008 at Gerrit Rietveld Academie, she published several books, has international shows and her work is part of several art collections. Keepsake is part of the 2014/2015 theme Our Memory, My Identity by Castrum Peregrini.

Travelling without moving

Layla van der Oord, Beeld en Taal student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, made drawings about the travel that takes place in the mind during sleep while the body performs an unnoticed cheography. We respect the need, dress up for the occasion, shut the curtains, set the alarm, close our eyes. What is left of us when we sleep? What is our body up to on its own?

RNPRF Marianna Ladreyt was asked to develop a raincoat. Ladreyt decided to use discordant functionalities, like a bathing suit towel. In her research it became clear she had to make a blurry u-turn. In this u-turn painted in water colour Ladreyt wondered around on the market and walked into diving suit material and decided to make a raincoat for wet people.
