IN BETWEEN, Nederland/Nepal

2008
Rietveld teacher Erna Anema's experience with Nepalese craftsmen led to the students programme 'In Between', in which the meaning of craftsmanship for society today is being researched. Craftsmanship is here defined in a broad sense, including close observation and manual dexterity. The Amsterdam student group found an ideal partner in students at KUarts, a young branche of the Kathmandu University. They appeared to be equally keen on discussions around the social dimension of art and design. 'In Between' is the first exchange project between the Netherlands and Nepal in the area of art education. In Nepal, tradition and innovation, religion and pragmatism, poverty and politeness are closely interwoven. 'Its current state of transition towards a Maoist capitalism', makes the country an incredibly rich exchange partner, writes the Rietveld Academy.
